Ten weeks in the letters of Peter, on standing firm when faith is tested.
Peter wrote to believers scattered across five Roman provinces, people facing pressure, suspicion, and suffering for their faith. His letters are steady and clear, calling the church to hold fast to hope, to live honorably under trial, and to remember that the God of all grace is at work.
Across ten Sundays we walked through 1 and 2 Peter together, on what it means to keep believing when life is hard, to stand firm against the lies that would unsettle us, and to grow into a faith that doesn't quit.

1 Peter 1:3-12
During the worst week of Navy SEAL training, a class ordered into freezing mud for fifteen hours started singing, off-key, one voice at a time, until the whole class joined in, and the mud somehow felt a little warmer.

1 Peter 1:13-23
Pastor Kyle Relph's toddler has picked up a habit: whenever something gets turned off or put away, he waves and says "bye-bye" to it, the fireplace on TV, the moon out the window, anything at all. Kyle uses his son's constant, clumsy imitation of his parents to open 1 Peter 1's command to be holy simply because God is holy.

A contractor in Michigan built the first floor of a two-story house without a hitch, then hit constant snags on the second, until his crew realized they'd been working off two nearly identical but different sets of blueprints. Pastor Mark Addis uses the story to open 1 Peter 2's picture of the church as living stones, all built on one Cornerstone.

Pastor Mark Addis tells Dietrich Bonhoeffer's story to close out 1 Peter, on standing firm in faith when the surrounding culture is bending Scripture to fit the moment.

What does it look like to already have everything you need for a godly life? This message on 2 Peter 1:3-11 walks through Peter's list of qualities that grow out of faith, and why serving is the result of salvation rather than the price of it. Preached by Pastor Mark Addis.

Mark's Gospel mentions, once, that other boats were out on the water the night a storm nearly swamped the disciples' boat. The detail never comes up again, it doesn't help the story, doesn't flatter anyone, doesn't get explained.

How do you spot a false teacher when the teaching sounds good and the teacher sounds sincere? This message works through 2 Peter 2, where Peter names the people exploiting the church for money and power, and asks what protects a congregation from them. Preached by Pastor Kyle Relph.

"Prepared for what?" someone asked Robert Baden-Powell after he coined the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared" in 1908. "Why, for any old thing," he replied. Pastor Mark Addis borrows the line to close out 1 and 2 Peter: readiness isn't about guessing a date for Christ's return, it's a posture for every day in between.
