God with us.

Christmas at New Hope is a season to slow down and look again at the heart of the story, that God didn't stay distant, but came near, born as a child, to be with us.

Across four Sundays in Advent we made room for wonder, tracing the family line from Abraham to Ruth to Solomon to Jesus, and the hope it still carries for every one of us.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Week 1 Kyle Relph December 1, 2024

Movie stunts use rubber knives, breakaway glass, and dulled swords, whatever keeps everyone safe while still looking real. "I once heard a leader say that many are called to lay something on the altar," writes Dr. J. Robert Clinton, "and they do, but they take along a rubber knife." Pastor Kyle Relph opens New Hope's Christmas series with the one Old Testament figure who brought the real one.

Week 2 Mark Addis December 8, 2024

A Minnesota barn burned to the ground overnight. Walking through the ashes, the farmer found a mother hen, dead, and nudged her body to check. Three chicks ran out from underneath her wings, alive. Pastor Mark Addis uses that image to open Ruth chapter 2, where a foreign widow with nothing finds shelter she never expected.

Week 3 Tim Rolen December 15, 2024

Four women show up in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus: a woman who tricked her father-in-law into fathering her child, a prostitute, a foreign widow, and a woman Matthew pointedly still calls "Uriah's wife" rather than by her own name, Bathsheba. Pastor Tim Rolen asks why God left the blemishes in the family tree instead of writing a cleaner story.

Week 4, series finale Mark Addis December 22, 2024

Four lighthouses have stood on the same small set of rocks off the English coast since 1698. A storm swept the first one away, along with its builder. Fire destroyed the second. The third, built into the rock instead of just anchored on top of it, is still standing 325 years later. Pastor Mark Addis closes New Hope's Christmas series with that history and Jesus's own parable of building on rock instead of sand.
